PRP Therapy at Altus Medical Group
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is an innovative treatment that harnesses the body's natural healing abilities to repair damaged cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and skin. By utilizing a concentrated dose of your own platelets, PRP therapy can accelerate the recovery process and provide a non-surgical alternative for various orthopedic and aesthetic conditions.
What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?
Blood is primarily composed of liquid (plasma), but it also contains small solid components: red cells, white cells, and platelets. While platelets are best known for their role in clotting blood, they also contain hundreds of specialized proteins called growth factors that are essential for healing injuries.
PRP is plasma that has a much higher concentration of platelets than is typically found in the blood. This concentration can be 5 to 10 times greater than usual, significantly increasing the delivery of healing proteins to a specific area of the body.
How the Process Works
The procedure is minimally invasive, typically completed in under an hour, and follows three main steps:
- Blood Collection: A small amount of blood is drawn from the patient, similar to a routine blood test.
- Centrifugation: The blood is placed in a centrifuge, a machine that spins at high speeds to separate the platelets from other blood components.
- Injection: The concentrated platelet-rich plasma is then injected directly into the injured or diseased tissue, often using ultrasound guidance to ensure precise placement.
Benefits of PRP Therapy
Natural Healing: Because the treatment uses your own blood, there is virtually no risk of an allergic reaction or rejection.
- Minimally Invasive: It provides a viable alternative to surgery for chronic pain or soft tissue injuries.
- Reduced Recovery Time: Many patients find they can return to their daily activities much faster than with traditional surgical interventions.
- Versatility: PRP is effectively used in sports medicine, orthopedics, dermatology, and even hair restoration.
Note: Every patient is unique. We recommend a consultation to determine if PRP therapy is the right path for your specific recovery goals.
